Cat Litter Box Training
Most cats actually
don’t need any litter box training. They will use the litter box right away. All you have to do is to show your cat where the litter
box is and it will start using it. However with some cats it can be a bit more of a challenge.
-
First you need to make sure that the litter box
is in the right location. There shouldn’t be any loud noises or food near the litter box.
-
Is the litter box difficult to get to? Then the
cat might use another place that it has easier access to. Also make sure that there is enough litter in the box.
If the cat doesn’t seem to want to step in the litter it could be worth testing a different kind of
litter.
-
If your cat is afraid to even enter the box you
can try to remove the top of the litter box.
-
Make sure that the box is not dirty. Cats are
clean animals and if the litter box is too dirty it will not use it.
If none the above solutions
help there could be some other things going on with your cat.
-
You might want to check if your cat is having
medical problems. Take your cat to the veterinarian to see if it has any signs of diarrhoea or other problems.
-
You could also be dealing with a territorial
cat. That can be the reason for urinating around the house. You might consider having your cat “fixed”.
Stress can also be a reason
for your cat to urinate outside the box. Have you changed any routines lately? Do you have an automatic cat litter box? The sound from those boxes sometimes scares the cat. Maybe its feeling neglected. You need to do what
you can to make your cat feel safe and comfortable. Spend some extra time with your cat playing and make it feel
special.
When your cat have “done it”
outside the litter box, the odour will attract it to the same spot over and over again. You need to get an odour remove and try to get rid of
as much odour as you can. You can use 50 percent vinegar solution or a store bought product to help.
When your cat is litter box trained you should consider cat clicker training for some more challange.
